“Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness.” -Thurber
The idea of staying in the NOW is somewhat like saying, “stay grounded.” The concept is probably easy to hear but it can be challenging to apply in our everyday lives. Have you ever found yourself reliving the past? Taking a time where you were hurt or treated unfairly and replaying the movie in your head? Or even going to the extent of what you could have done differently? Do you ever play out possible scenarios for your future either good or bad? When we’re over consumed by thoughts of the past and future we are missing out on the moment. If you think about it, consider just how many moments you’ve missed.
We may want to blame, burden, or even allow ourselves to become the victim when life seems unfair but the truth of the matter is you have the ability to make a choice no matter the circumstance. Don’t get me wrong, you’re allowed to feel and I encourage it because suppressing your feelings can lead you down a treacherous road but then take responsibility in what I like to define as, “protecting your peace.”
When we are constantly playing the a ficticious movie in our mind whether it’s a replay of the past or an unknown future we trap ourselves in that sense of “fake time.” You’re living solely through memories and anticipation. The moment that stands right in front of you is lost.
“The beginning of freedom is the realization that you are not “the thinker.” The moment your start watching the thinker, a higher level of consciousness becomes activated. You also realize that all the things that truly matter-beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace are from beyond the mind. You begin to awaken.”-Tolle
It’s time to wake up and smell the coffee, as they used to say but I say, “It’s time to wake up and cherish the NOW.”
